UK Network hosts Quarterly Meeting on Labour Issue Area
Monday, March 01, 2010

The UK Network held its first quarterly meeting of 2010 on 1 March at IBLF's offices in London. The focus of the meeting was the labour issue area, with presenters sharing their experience of managing international supply chains that integrate the Global Compact's labour principles.

Following a welcome from Michael Spenley, UK Network Chairman, Mark Barnett from The Consortium for Purchasing and Distribution Ltd gave an SME perspective of the challenges of integrating labour principles into supply chain management. He highlighted the important role that the UN Global Compact can play in bringing together SMEs and providing a network of support and ideas. Tony Campos, FTSE Group, discussed the evolving FTSE4Good index criteria and the contribution of FTSE Group to raising standards by holding direct conversations with companies. Janet Williamson, Trades Union Congress, gave the final presentation, emphasising the ongoing challenge of raising labour standards and the importance of actively working with trade unions and of collective bargaining to address the balance of power against employees. In particular, Janet raised the point that reliable verifications of labour standards in supply chains cannot be achieved without the input of independent trade unions.
