How to Join

Benefits of Participation in the UK Network
While each organisation has its own reasons for joining, for many companies the benefits of membership include:

Network Events
  • Regular Network Quarterly Meetings provide a forum for valuable knowledge exchange between UK Network members.  Quarterly meetings are preceded by presentations from leading experts and UK Network participants about issues relating to the Global Compact's issue areas.
  • These meetings also facilitate the dissemination of information from the UNGC headquarters and provide a neutral venue for members to interact with Observer organisations.
  • Outreach Events organised by the Network provide members with opportunities to learn about issues relating to the Global Compact.  For example, the Network has organised opportunities for participants to meet with Georg Kell, Executive Director of the UNGC for informal Q&A sessions.  Also, last year the network engaged Sir Mark Moody-Stuart, Chairman of the Global Compact Foundation and Vicky Pryce, Chief Economist BERR, to speak to UK GC signatories.
  • The Network has developed and regularly hosts a webinar entitled, "How to Communicate About the UN Global Compact".  The presentation has been very well received and the network will be exploring other opportunities to use this technology.
  • More information on UK Network events both past and future can be found here.
COP Guidance & Peer Review
  • The UK Network website provides guidance on how to complete a Communication on Progress (COP); the Secretariat and Network members can provide additional assistance and even mentoring upon request.
  • The COP Peer Review Programme provides members with valuable feedback on their COP.  Members doing the reviews also report that they learn a great deal from the experience.
Website
  • The UK Network website publicises members' participation and support for the Global Compact.
  • The website is also a useful resource for members.

Influencing Public Policy
  • The UK Network has well-established lines of communication with the UK government, with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills a UK Network observer.
  • The Network also ensures that the interests of UK based signatories are considered by the Global Compact Offices by actively participating in the Annual Local Networks Forum and Global Compact working groups.

Fulfilling Obligations as a Signatory to the Compact
  • By supporting the UK Network, members are partially fulfilling their obligation to the Compact since the Network is acting on behalf of its members to
    1. mainstream the 10 principles in business activities around the world, and
    2. catalyse actions in support of the UNGC goals.
  • The Global Compact office expects signatories to formally support local networks as part of their commitment to the Global Compact itself.
