| Activity orientation of the UK Network
The members of the UK Network of the UN Global Compact devote time and resources to achieve the aims of the Network and the Global Compact overall. This is principally achieved through participation in one or more of the Network working groups which include Communications on Progress, Network Liaison, SMEs and Communications.
Opportunities regularly arise for members to engage in both theme-based (e.g. business ethics and human rights) and regional working groups, in partnership with other European networks.
All new members are strongly encouraged to consider joining and contributing to the work of a working group. Volunteers are also sought to chair new working groups as they develop.
Communication on Progress (COP) Working Group
Kevin Franklin, Maplecroft, chairs the COP working group. Its main objectives are to:
- Review the process for submission and assessment of COPs for network members
- Ensure sufficient guidance is maintained for COP producers and reviewers and that this is adequately communicated
- Engage with other national networks as opportunities arise to share experience of COPs
Communications Working Group
Marcia Balisciano, Reed Elsevier, chairs the Communications working group. Its main objectives are to:
- Provide mechanisms to exchange information with existing signatories in the UK and farther afield through a website and other means
- Share information about the UNGC with non-signatories in the UK and elsewhere to inspire interest and participation
- Serve as a communications point between the UK Network and the UNGC office
Network Liaison Working Group
Michelle Wolfe, Aviva, chairs the Network Liaison working group. Its main objectives are to:
- Represent the UK Network at external events
- Assist emerging Networks with governance issues
- Place emerging networks in contact with the other working groups on a need basis
Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) Working Group
Mark Barnett, The Consortium for Purchasing and Distribution, chairs the SME working group. Its main objectives are to:
- Provide practical support, relevant guidance and tools that are easy to use for SME members
- Increase SME membership of UNGC in the UK
- Market UNGC as a simple ‘first step’ entry into CSR reporting and creating a socially responsible and sustainable culture within SME businesses
